Explore the diversity of archaeological misconceptions, mistakes and distortions.
We are dedicated to exposing Bad Archaeology wherever we find it, naming and shaming, pulling no punches in exploring all its shameless horror.
Ben Goldacre’s Bad Science Website
Very much an inspiration for this site. Dr Goldacre is a regular columnist for the Guardian and has made numerous media appearances over the last few years. This is when he is not doing his day job of being a GP in London.
In the Hall of Maat
A website dedicated to weighing the case for alternative history. There are many essays taking a critical look at chronology, geology, egyptology and everything else that is used in the defence of Bad Archaeology. Contributions come from interested experts, amateurs and academics.
Richard Dawkins’ Website
A great resource of regularly updated news and features all about the public misunderstanding of science (with an inevitable focus on evolution). The archive contains numerous entertaining and informative media resources.
James Randi Educational Foundation
Great name, great man. Debunker par excellence. The Florida-based former magician has $1,000,000 for you if you can prove such archaeological gems as ley lines and the efficacy of dowsing are more than just figments of your imagination.
The View from Number Eighty
A sceptical website reviewing news items, websites and other sources of misinformation. Political, incisive and very, very entertaining.
Butterflies and Wheels
The top web resource for combatting academic manifestations of pseudoscience and epistemic relativism. Ophelia Benson and Jeremy Stangroom edit the website which is a collection of writing dedicated (in their words) to fighting fashionable nonsense.
Center for Inquiry
The purpose of the Center for Inquiry (based in the U.S.) is to promote and defend reason, science, and freedom of inquiry in all areas of human endeavor. Through education, research, publishing, and social services, it seeks to present affirmative ethical alternatives (to all forms of superstition) based on scientific naturalism. It is responsible for the excellent Point of Inquiry Podcast
Critical Enquiry
Critical Enquiry is live again after a long hiatus, and we expect to add a great deal of new content in 2008. The site’s mission is expanding, and will now include additional material on society, historical myths, scientific literacy, and other important topics. We may also launch a blog or chat group if time and user demand permit. As usual, we will pull no punches and will dig for the truth based on the evidence. There are no sacred cows; any subject is fair game. The US political scene may occupy some of our time during this year, since it’s so myth-filled and subject to “spin” by individuals and groups.
