Metal detecting is a popular hobby and the vast numbers of finds generated ave been touted by the UK government as making a major contribution to knowledge of the past, yet some archaeologists are vehemently opposed to metal detectorists and some metal detectorists regard archaeologists as power-hungry elitists. Is there common ground to explore?
